Site Superintendent – Commercial, Retail & Office ConstructionPosition Overview

Our Client is seeking an experienced Site Superintendent to oversee commercial, retail, office, restaurant, financial, and property-management construction projects across Ontario and other parts of Canada.

This is a hands-on site leadership role. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing daily site operations, coordinating subcontractors and trades, maintaining project schedules, enforcing safety standards, and supporting the Project Manager from site mobilization through to final completion and client handover.

Because many of our projects are fast-paced retail and commercial build-outs, remodels, and rollouts, the Site Superintendent must be comfortable working on tight timelines, travelling for extended periods, working occasional night shifts, and assisting directly with site work when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervising all daily construction activities on site.
  • Coordinating subcontractors, trades, suppliers, and on-site crews.
  • Ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and quality standards.
  • Supporting the Project Manager with site mobilization, setup, planning, scheduling, and closeout.
  • Monitoring project progress and identifying issues that may impact schedule, budget, safety, or quality.
  • Providing daily site reports, including progress updates, manpower, safety items, deficiencies, and other project-related details.
  • Enforcing all health and safety requirements, company policies, site rules, and applicable local safety regulations.
  • Reviewing work in progress to ensure quality workmanship and compliance with project drawings, specifications, and client expectations.
  • Assisting with the resolution of site issues, including design conflicts, change requests, material deficiencies, and equipment challenges.
  • Coordinating the efficient use of labor, materials, tools, equipment, and site resources.
  • Maintaining strong communication with the Project Manager, trades, clients, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
  • Supporting deficiency completion, final inspections, turnover, and key handover.
  • Performing hands-on site work when required, including carpentry, blocking, trim, door installation, fixture installation, minor drywall work, and general site support.

Required Experience & Qualifications

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Minimum 5 years of commercial or retail construction site supervisory experience.
  • Proven experience managing projects from mobilization through final completion and turnover.
  • Strong understanding of commercial, retail, office, restaurant, or tenant-improvement construction.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple trades and subcontractors on fast-paced projects.
  • Strong knowledge of construction site safety requirements and safe work practices.
  • Hands-on carpentry, drywall, and general construction skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, schedules, and site documentation.
  • Strong communication, leadership, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate daily reports and site records.
  • Basic tools required to perform hands-on site work.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required.

Working Conditions

The successful candidate must be comfortable with:

  • Travel to projects throughout Ontario.
  • Extended out-of-town project assignments, potentially for up to 10 weeks.
  • Occasional nightshift work when projects must be completed outside regular business hours.
  • Fast-paced commercial and retail project timelines, typically ranging from 4 to 10 weeks.
  • Hands-on involvement in site work when needed.
  • Working in active retail or commercial environments where safety, cleanliness, professionalism, and schedule control are critical.
