Position Overview:
The Estimator role is a permanent full-time position. This position will support the preparation of accurate, competitive estimates for industrial projects. This role is primarily responsible for the development of detailed estimates and tender submissions for scopes including civil concrete, mechanical trades, sheet metal, and insulation and scaffolding.
The Estimator works closely with operations and project management teams to evaluate project risk, pricing strategy, and constructability, supporting successful bid outcomes and smooth transition to project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret contract documents, design drawings, and specifications for industrial and commercial projects.
- Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for mechanical, civil concrete, sheet metal, insulation, scaffolding and related work.
- Analyze labour, material, equipment and subcontractor costs to develop complete and accurate estimates.
- Develop preliminary budgets, assumptions and risk analysis for tender submissions and internal reviews.
- Identify, solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing to support competitive bids.
- Collaborate with estimating leadership, project management and operations teams to refine estimates and construction strategies.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits and scope reviews to confirm project requirements.
- Present estimate summaries, assumptions, risks and opportunities to internal stakeholders.
- Prepare finalized estimate and proposal documents for submission.
- Organize and document estimate files, assumptions and supporting information to ensure a smooth transition to the project execution team.
- Participate in subcontractor and supplier selection reviews with the Divisional Managers and Project Management teams prior to issuing purchase orders or subcontracts.
- Maintain and develop historical cost data unit rate databases for future estimating efforts.
- Provide limited support to project teams with planning, scheduling, reporting or monitoring activities when required during peak periods.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management or related discipline or equivalent industry experience.
- P. Eng, Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or equivalent professional designation is an asset.
Experience
- 5 – 10 years of estimating experience in Industrial or Commercial Construction environments.
- Demonstrated experience estimating civil concrete, mechanical trades, sheet metal, insulation and scaffolding scopes.
- Experience working on industrial facilities, maintenance, shutdowns or brownfield projects is considered an asset.
- Strong proficiency in estimating software preferably ProEst and BlueBeam.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and familiarity with Primavera P6 is an asset.
- Solid understanding of construction methods, productivity rates and cost drivers in industrial environments.
- Possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License - preference will be given to candidates with a clean driving record (driving abstract required)
Organization Structure:
The Estimator reports to the Director of Corporate Services and works closely with the Operations teams.
Working Conditions:
- Working primarily in Breck Construction office with occasional travel to/from various jobsites as needed.
- Must work independently and accurately in an environment with frequent interruptions.
- At times, must manage a heavy workload while meeting multiple deadlines, adjusting priorities as needed.
- Repetitive computer-based work in an office setting.
