Reporting to the Manager, Energy Risk and Intelligence, the Energy Market Analyst is responsible for delivering critical, timely market and risk intelligence to the ABmunis Energy Program and its stakeholders. The Analyst’s primary role is to support quantitative evidence-based decision-making across energy procurement, hedging, customer quotations, portfolio risk monitoring, and contract support through effective analysis and clear communication. This role also provides supporting credit and prudential analysis to inform contracting decisions and ongoing counterparty/credit monitoring.
Key areas of support include:
- Reports on Alberta electricity and natural gas market conditions, including real-time and forward pricing.
- Commodity risk and portfolio exposure, including monitoring of positions, volumes, and hedge effectiveness.
- Regulatory changes and the impact on customer economics and procurement decisions.
- Maintaining accuracy and currency on inputs that support billing and financial settlement.
- Managing customer account, contract, site and consumption records for price quotes and product risk analytics.
- Credit and prudential analysis inputs to support contract approvals, ongoing monitoring, and related documentation.
Know-HowPractical/ Technical Knowledge
- Post Secondary degree or diploma, emphasizing quantitative analysis, research, and applied modelling (e.g., Business, Economics, Finance, Engineering, Data/Analytics, or related). An acceptable combination of work experience and post-secondary education may be considered as equivalent.
- Preferred 2-3 years Utilities Industry Knowledge.
- Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a relevant analytical position working with large data sets, or equivalent experience working within industry environment. Includes:
- Descriptive and predictive analysis, trending, impact analysis, and benchmarking.
- Strong proficiency with analytical and reporting tools, including Microsoft Excel (advanced), SQL querying and data extraction, and business intelligence/visualization tools such as Tableau.
- Understanding of databases and data structures sufficient to validate, reconcile, and interpret outputs; familiarity with relational databases and data concepts is an asset.
- Knowledge of Alberta’s electricity and natural gas industries, including an understanding of key organizations and market constructs (e.g., AESO Pool Price, NGX/ICE constructs) is required; deeper market design knowledge is an asset.
- Experience translating business questions into analytical methods (descriptive and diagnostic analysis, trending, variance/impact analysis, and scenario comparisons).
- Experience translating back and forth between Business Requirements and Information Technology Computer Science Requirements.
- Experience supporting commercial decision-making through clear written summaries, visualizations, and assumptions documentation.
- Experience with credit/risk concepts (e.g., counterparty/customer monitoring, basic financial statement review, and prudential/security concepts) is an asset.

Communicating and Influencing Skills
- Skilled at condensing complex information into succinct and easily understood summaries (e.g., concise emails, work summarization memos, and dashboards).
- Strong communication skills (written and oral) with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Able to explain key drivers, assumptions, risks, and limitations of analysis in a clear and constructive manner.
Responsibilities
This position supports market intelligence, risk analytics, and credit-related decision support activities using energy market, portfolio, and customer information records.

- Provide timely market insights to support pricing and procurement decision-making, including commentary on relevant market drivers and forward/real-time dynamics.
- Develop repeatable analysis and monitoring outputs that summarize portfolio exposures, volume assumptions, and risk drivers for internal stakeholders.
- Support hedge and settlement related review activities by validating inputs, reconciling analytical assumptions, and documenting exceptions or issues when identified.
- Disseminate reports and communicate findings through clear visuals, dashboards, and concise written summaries tailored to the audience.
- Conduct credit reviews and support analysis for prospective and existing customers/counterparties as required by business processes, including documenting findings and recommended mitigations when appropriate.
- Monitor credit-related indicators and support ongoing monthly/periodic review activities, including tracking prudential/security requirements and changes (as applicable).
- Maintain organized documentation of methods, assumptions, and data sources to ensure repeatability, transparency, and auditability of analysis.
- Liaise with IT and other partners as required to address data quality, reporting, and analytics needs; identify opportunities to improve automation and reduce manual effort.
- Stay up to date on relevant Alberta energy sector issues (regulated and deregulated) and communicate emerging risks/opportunities to internal stakeholders.
